Hey Marianopolites! Over the course of our 2 online semesters, I have noticed and enjoyed the thrilling Marianopolis student life, despite the odd situation. I want to ensure this feeling of community is maintained throughout our CEGEP experience. For that reason, I am grateful to present myself as your potential president alongside my good friend and colleague Anne Lin Arghirescu as VP for the upcoming 2 semesters!

As your current External Affairs, I have represented you for the last year and cannot be more grateful for the unique opportunities this has brought me. You helped me to accomplish many goals, such as hosting an intercollegiate Talk event, organizing a volunteering fair and managing a networking event. As your president, I would strive to provide you with meaningful, value-packed experiences. I fully intend to make Marianopolis more sustainable and transparent with the student body while fostering the sense of community our school is known for.

Leadership is about vision, responsibility, and collaboration. I am confident I have acquired the adequate skillset with every new experience I undertook to help me develop these qualities. You will be represented; your voice will be heard and your opinion, always valued. I can assure you Anne and I have your best interest at heart. We will be stimulating the student life to the absolute maximum!

During uncertain times, we all need a bit of consistency. Anne and I have been quenching your thirst for student life activities for the past year in Congress and rest assured, we will continue to do so as your Vice-President and President. I would be beyond enthusiastic to remain your channel of communication between the administration and the student body. So, folks, why would you want to change a winning formula!

Anne Lin Arghirescu

Vice-President

Anne Lin Arghirescu for Vice-Presidency.

Dear good humans of MSU,

My name is Anne (Sophie) Lin Arghirescu, and I’m a first-year social science student. I’m your current Coordinator of Internal Affairs in Congress, and a member of the Student Advocacy Committee, and the Sustainability Committee. You might know me from the Online Fundraiser Agreement that I drafted, or perhaps from the Boba Club student discount. Or maybe you’ve seen me before embarrassing myself as Tinky Winky during a MUN conference.

In addition to overseeing the legalities of MSU affairs, I’m an executive member of the Green Team, the Marianopolis Literary Magazine, Euphoria magazine, and an enthusiast member of Silver Key, Mari MUN and the Marianopolis Theatre Company. I’ve also spearheaded my own club, Artists for Society, that seeks to support culturally-diverse Montreal artists and organizes professionally-led workshops for Marianopolis students. Some of the other initiatives I had the chance to bring to life this year include the Circles for Reconciliation, that bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous students together for mediated discussions, and the Les Impatients therapeutic art workshops in collaboration with Marianopolis’ counselling service, that offer students struggling with mental health a creative outlet.

As you might have noticed, I’m... rather (abnormally) impassioned with student life at Mari, and that is precisely the reason why I am running for vice-presidency, alongside Pratham Mehta for presidency. To enhance the visibility of your clubs and increase participation to your events, I will centralize student life on the MSU website, by creating a monthly master calendar that provides you with a snapshot glance at all the events happening at Marianopolis. Working with the tech committee, you will even be able to filter through the events based on the type of clubs and initiatives you are interested in! I know all of you have a vast range of creative talents (swipe up those tiktoks and IG videos) and I want you to be able to showcase these skills, and share them. The Tinder for skills project I propose to you will aim to connect students who have an interest in learning from each other special skills, be it digital drawing, playing the guitar, or building workout schedules. To increase this sense of community, Pratham and I will also seek to organize an annual alumni get-together event, which will allow current students to network with Marianopolis graduates through a series of social events and career-oriented workshops. Finally, I am committed to fostering a sustainable campus, through enacting the 5-year green plan drafted by the sustainability committee. Together with Pratham, we will also organize an annual pitch competition to fund your innovative ideas that have a positive environmental and sustainable impact.

Now, as a first-year member of the MSU Congress, I’ve been a direct witness to the issues and concerns that you’ve encountered, involving mental health, academic workload, online schedules, and the hassle of organizing social activities in times of Covid, among others. But I’ve also had the occasion to speak directly with the administrative board of the College, to get acquainted with the complex workings of school planning, and to help devise solutions. My familiarity with the functioning of MSU Congress and the rapport I have built with members of Student Services and of the administration will be an important asset when the time comes to shift to an in- person semester: the upmost priority on my agenda is to ensure a smooth transition. To achieve this, Pratham and I will facilitate communication between students and the administration, through a student concern board on the MSU website. Additionally, to improve communication with teachers, we will implement the first student teacher townhall.

I hope you’ll stick around this week while I share with you the entirety of my platform!

My name is Holly Markomanolaki, and I am a student in Honours Health science. When I heard about the Congress elections and saw that the position for president was available, I knew immediately that it would be a great opportunity to make a difference. I am a very outgoing and extroverted person who loves to speak her mind. I like to speak my mind on anything, from the blatantly obvious to the major elephants in the room. However, this aspect of my personality alone did not push me to run for president. During the fall semester, I conducted a study concerning the effect that online learning had on the students here at Marianopolis. The results were absolutely staggering and caused a true shift in the perspective I had on our student body. Students are struggling, and it isn’t just a few of them. Symptoms of mental illness, such as anxiety and depression, are extremely common, and have been felt by a majority of students. I like to call this majority the “silent majority” because that is exactly who they are. The wellbeing of our fellow peers only appears to be as good as the people who turn on their cameras and unmute themselves in class and can make it seem like students are adapting just fine on the surface. However, further investigation like the study I conducted paints a much darker picture. While classes may go back in-person next semester, the context in which we will find ourselves will change, but this hidden problem will persist and may even be harder to detect. We cannot let so many students slip between the cracks. I want to run for president because I stand to represent this silent majority. I want to make sure that no matter how outspoken or timid people may be, that their voice is accurately represented in Congress. Making such sources of feedback readily available to students is important for knowing what they really want. This is why I am planning on starting up casual, regular polls to gauge the real issues that need to be talked about during meetings. Another huge issue that was brought up during the time I spent conducting my study was severe isolation. Of course, the pandemic has exacerbated this problem, but making connections and finding people to rely on is tricky regardless. Students need friends. College is rough, and the support peers provide is absolutely essential to mental and academic wellbeing. Working with students, I plan on finding an effective way to regulate a means of communication between students in the same classes or the same teacher. Consistency with teaching is also key, and I would like to ensure that teachers maintain consistency with aspects of learning such as having a uniform platform used, and having submission times regulated to alleviate student stress. All in all, I want to make all of Congress’ activities as transparent and as relevant as I possibly can to the student body, because at the end of the day, they are the voice, and someone running for president should seek to represent them in the most accurate and understanding way possible.

Thank you,
Holly Markomanolaki

Throughout the year I’ve been able to help my friends and classmates with diverse questions and tried to be there when they were in need. In a year with everything online people needed more support from other people. I’ve also tried to be active in a few clubs and I believe that I know enough people to communicate with execs of several different clubs and I believe that I can get to know other execs to be able to clearly communicate with them. Also, after a whole year with a very lack luster response from the school I want to be on the Board of Directors and give students a direct link with the board and present problems that are raised by the students. I also believe that I can communicate with the students a lot since I’m active on social media and I always read any messages sent to me and will take them into consideration if I ever must decide on anything.

I also seem to have quite a bit of free time which I believe I can utilize to improve student affairs through communicating with students and listening to what problems they have. As much as I like to talk to people and don’t mind being in front of people, I believe that being with someone like Holly I’ll be able to help her and be able to communicate efficiently with the students.
